Renaissance Trio

Special Lectures
on December 28, 29, and 30

Join us at the Institute for any or all of three wonderful evenings of great Renaissance art by Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, and Michelangelo presented by Dr. William Fredlund.

Monday, December 28, 2009: Alessandro Botticelli
Botticelli was an exact contemporary of Leonardo da Vinci and studied in the same artist's studio in Florence. The paintings of Botticelli provided the brilliant Medici circle with the first two definitive visions of the new optimism of Renaissance Florence: "The Birth of Venus" and "La Primavera." These two masterpieces hung in the Medici palace at opposite ends of a great hall. Come see these two famous paintings and many other beautiful Botticelli visions.

Tuesday, December 29, 2009: Leonardo da Vinci
Leonardo began life as an illegitimate, unwanted little boy in a tiny Tuscan town, and went on to become the most celebrated artist of his day. His "Last Supper" was called the greatest painting in all of history. Kings and queens, dukes and duchesses vied for his services. He died in a beautiful chateau in France, living his last years as a prince. Come see his spectacular achievement.

Wednesday, December 30, 2009: Michelangelo Buonarroti
Michelangelo was rough and tough. He didn't like fancy clothes; he didn't like fancy men; so it is no surprise that he didn't like Leonardo da Vinci. The men were lifelong rivals even though from different generations. Their occasional meetings in the streets of Florence were filled with barbed remarks and heavy sarcasm. But they both knew they were the two greatest Florentine painters of their time. Michelangelo excelled at one art Leonardo never mastered: sculpture. He never let Leonardo forget it. Come see Michelangelo's paintings, sculpture and architecture in this wonderful Institute presentation.
