Lectures at the Institute
Modern French Masters
On Monday, March 14, through Thursday, March 17, 2011, the Institute will present four evening lectures by Dr. William H. Fredlund on these modern French masters:
Seurat, Toulouse-Lautrec, Cezanne, and Rousseau.
Monday, March 14, 2011 ~ Georges Pierre Seurat
Seurat's most famous painting, the iconic "Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grand Jatte," now in the Art Institute of Chicago, has been one of the most influential paintings of all time, a work that altered the direction of modern art by initiating Neo-Impressionism. Come spend a fascinating evening with this revolutionary painter.
Tuesday, March 15, 2011 ~ Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec
The art of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec is inseparable from Montmartre, the working-class district on the outskirts of Paris where the artist lived for most of his career and painted the denizens of its dance halls, cabarets, circuses, and brothels. On Tuesday evening, we will see Montmartre through his eyes.
Wednesday, March 16, 2011 ~ Paul Cézanne
Cézanne's paintings, which demonstrate a mastery of design, color, tone, and composition, are at once both a direct expression of the sensations of the observing eye and an abstraction from observed nature. His work laid the foundations of the transition from 19th century art to a new and radically different world of art in the 20th century.
Thursday, March 17, 2011 ~ Henri Rousseau
Rousseau, a painter in the Naive or Primitive manner, was ridiculed during his life, but came to be recognized as a self-taught genius. Come see his fantastic jungle images, inspired by the botanical gardens in Paris, of which he said: "When I go into the glass houses and I see the strange plants of exotic lands, it seems to me that I enter into a dream."
